Unveiling Women’s Significance: A Journey from Invisibility to Empowerment

Feminism, often misunderstood, is a movement advocating for gender equality and dismantling patriarchal structures. Feminism seeks gender equality, not supremacy. It challenges patriarchal norms to create opportunities for all genders. Feminism is often misconstrued as misandry or solely benefiting women. Yet, it aims to address gender inequalities that harm both men and women. Some men view feminism as threatening their privilege, but many recognize its importance in dismantling systemic inequality. Feminism aims to create an equitable world, challenging gender norms and amplifying marginalized voices.

In 2023 edition of the WPS Index, India ranks 128 out of 177 countries with an index score of 0.595.

The WPS Index is published by the Georgetown Institute for Women, Peace and Security and the PRIO Centre on Gender, Peace, and Security with support from the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. WPX Index is calculated in terms of three factors, women’s Inclusion, justice, and security.

The gender gap is the difference between women and men as reflected in social, political, intellectual, cultural, or economic attainments or attitudes. The Global Gender Gap Index aims to measure this gap in four key areas: health, education, economics, and politics.

The GGGI ranks countries on a scale from 0 to 1. A score of 1 indicates that a country has achieved complete gender equality. Conversely, a score of 0 signifies a complete lack of equality.

Despite these advancements, gender disparities persist in areas such as pay equity, representation in leadership positions, and access to education and healthcare.

Throughout history, societal attitudes towards women have been marked by a pervasive control wielded by men, manifesting in various forms of oppression and subjugation. In ancient civilizations, women were often relegated to domestic roles, with their autonomy and rights severely restricted. In many cultures, they were considered property, subjected to the authority of fathers or husbands. The advent of organized religion further solidified patriarchal structures, prescribing rigid gender roles and justifying women’s inferior status. Despite sporadic advancements, such as during the suffrage movements of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, where women fought for the right to vote, pervasive discrimination persisted. Even in modern times, gender disparities persist in various spheres, from the workplace to politics. However, women have continuously challenged these norms, advocating for equality and empowerment.
